During your stargazing sessions, one almost indispensable accessory I recommend is a red flashlight or a red light headlamp. They are relatively cheap and some are even bundled together with some telescopes.
A flashlight with red light is recommended for astronomy because the eye’s rod cells are affected less by red light then by blue light. When you go from bright light to dark, your eye will do two things. First, your pupils will dilate to let in more light. In daylight, the pupil may open anywhere between 1 to 2 millimeters. However in darkness that can jump anywhere from 5 to 7 mm. The second thing it does it produce more rhodopsin from the eye’s rod cells which increases sensitivity to light. Thus it can take up to 30 minutes for the eyes to fully adapt again to a darker environment and see more details.
